Delta County Judge Jason Murray presided over his first regular meeting on Monday. Topping the discussion of agenda was a resolution for Charles Edwards of Resource Management to consider the community development through BLOCK program – aimed at low income citizens determined by a prior door-to-door survey. Edwards also presented a Disaster Relief grant (with the denial of the FEMA relief). The Court accepted the recommendation and the resolution.
Delta County Sheriff Ricky Smith received approval 4-0 for the Interlocal Agreement for Cooperative Work within the 8th Judicial District.
Sheriff Smith continued with possible action to hire a jailer to help develop an inmate work program (similar to Hopkins County and other counties). He said his main concern would be the availability of inmates as it would be on a voluntary basis but planned on offering incentives to combat that issue.
He explained the pros and cons to the program. The Commissioners, while positive about this offer, opted to table the item for the Jan. 26 meeting.
Judge Jason Murray closed by stating, “I highly recommend we [referencing all purchasing parties of the County] buy from Delta County businesses…Try to trade locally, they are paying taxes too.”
He also noted he will only be voting on action items if there is a need for a tie-breaking vote.
