Kauffman, Henderson Issue Region's First Burn Bans

Tuesday reached 102 degrees in Northeast Texas. Humidity is low, the skies are clear, and breezes are steady. That, of course, means the region is at risk for wildfires. And that should hold true for another week or so at the very least.

With the stakes so high, Kauffman and Henderson counties became the first in Northeast Texas to enact burn bans this summer.

Henderson County today outlawed outdoor burning for the next 30 days. Kauffman County today set a 45-day ban.

The bans do not prohibit fireworks. Still, the Texas A&M Forest Service advises extreme caution, given drought conditions and fire-friendly weather. Officials in both counties recommend keeping a close watch on any Independence Day fireworks. And to keep a bucket of water nearby.
