After an exciting first half between the two squads, the #8 Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions were able to put away the Delta State Statesmen in the second half in route to a 40-28 victory, their first ever victory in a game played in the state of Mississippi.

The teams were neck and neck through the first fifteen minutes with the Lions (2-0) holding a 17-14 lead after the first quarter of play. After the Statesmen (1-1) retook the lead in the second quarter, A&M-Commerce used a 66 yard touchdown pass from Luis Perez to Lance Evans to retake the lead, which they would not relinquish.

A&M-Commerce started the scoring with a 38 yard field goal by Kristov Martinez, capping an eleven play, 54 yard drive to lead 3-0. The Lions used an interception on Delta State’s first drive to go ahead 10-0 when Richard Cooper scored a touchdown from nine yards out.

Delta State countered with a seven play, 58 yard drive to cut the lead to 10-7 after Chris Robinson ran the ball in from eight yards out. A great return by the Lions Buck Wilson on the kickoff led to the next touchdown for A&M-Commerce, as Cooper scored again, this time from eight yards out, and the Lions led 17-7.

Delta State would cut into the deficit before the end of the first quarter, as Robinson would score another touchdown, from a yard out, to finish off another long drive of 12 plays and 75 yards. The Statesmen would use their first drive in the second quarter to take their first and only lead in the game on a two yard touchdown run by Robinson, his third touchdown of the game, to give Delta State a 21-17 lead.

A&M-Commerce used the touchdown from Perez to Evans to retake the lead at 24-21. That score would hold up past halftime, and in the third, the “truck” package would lead to another Lion score as Gabriel Rodriguez would score on a three yard run to put the Lions up 31-21. Martinez would add another field goal before the end of the quarter, from 35 yards out, and the Lions led 34-21 to start the fourth.

The Lions put the game away for good in the fourth with a touchdown pass from Perez to Buck Wilson from 15 yards out. The Lions failed to convert for two points, making their lead 40-21. The Statesmen capped off the scoring with a 5 yard touchdown run by Timothy Foy to make it 40-28.

A&M-Commerce was led on offense by quarterback Luis Perez. He went 17-23 for 322 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite targets through the air were D’Arthur Cowan who hauled in five catches for 84 yards, and Lance Evans who caught four passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. Richard Cooper also added 22 carries on the ground for 87 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Delta State was led on offense by Chris Robinson as the running back had 16 carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns. The Lions did a good job limiting Statesmen quarterback Tyler Sullivan, as he went 30-37 for 221 yards, no touchdowns, and three interceptions.

The Lions two game road stretch continues next week as they travel to Portales, New Mexico to take on the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds (1-1, 1-0 LSC). The game is scheduled for a 1 PM (MST) kickoff (2 PM CST). You can hear every Lions football game on KETR, and right here online at ketr.org.
