The progress of the ongoing Lions Club shoe drive is racing to a strong finish. The Club is currently collecting new and used shoes to raise funds to help with local scholarships and community projects throughout the year. District 2-X2 receives 40 cents per pound of shoes donated.

But the collection is two-fold as it will also help with underprivileged citizens in impoverished countries as they will be repurposing and selling them in order support their selves and families by paying for housing, food and educational expenses. Can you imagine never owning a pair of shoes? Collection boxes for the shoes are located at the Delta County Courthouse, City Hall in Cooper, Delta County Sheriff’s office, Miller’s Pharmacy, Cooper Review, at Club President Diane Stegall’s Woodmen of America office, Post Office in Cooper, several surrounding churches and post offices, or to any Club member, as well. The Club will be collecting the shoes until the District Meeting, which is to be held at the Delta County Civic Center, on Saturday, Oct. 24.

“Long term goal is to help others who need help,” said Club President Diane Stegall. The Lions Club would like to extend appreciation to those who have already contributed to this drive. The overwhelming response is amazing.

In addition, First United Methodist Church in Cooper joins Lions Club of Cooper for Shoe Collection. As a Mission Project, the First United Methodist Church in Cooper in partnership with the Lions Club of Cooper is contributing to the shoes collection that will be sent to a country, where many people have no shoes. Members of the congregation have contributed 99 pairs of new and used, wearable shoes for this ministry. Zelda Fisher, Mission Chairman at FUMC, and Billie Choate, church member, have inventoried and packed the 99 pairs of shoes to be picked up by the local Lions Club.

REMINDER: The Lions Club will be hosting their Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Chiggerfest. Tickets are $5 each for an all-you-can-eat pancake, orange juice, coffee, sausage breakfast. It will be held at the Cooper Fire Station on the North Side of the Square from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.
