Don't be fooled by the fact that the Lions aren't at the top of the Lone Star Conference. The Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball team, which won the LSC tournament last season, are among the six teams considered to be legitimate contenders for this year's conference crown.

  Audio transcript

Charlie Chitwood: Sam Walker’s favorite expression this year has been: “There are no bad teams in the Lone Star Conference, there are only good teams with some bad records.”

Mark Haslett: For the Texas A&M University-Commerce men’s basketball team, the highlight so far   of this year’s season came back on January 9th.

Chitwood: ...here comes the horn. It’s over! The A&M-Commerce men have picked up an enormous win on the road, going to 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play! They knock off the fourth ranked Angelo State Rams in San Angelo. We’ll have the numbers and a visit with Sam Walker right after this...

Haslett: KETR’s Charlie Chitwood providing the play-by-play. The defeat of nationally ranked Angelo State got the Lions off to a good start in Lone Star Conference competition, but A&M-Commerce sputtered a bit in the weeks that followed. The Lions go into this Saturday’s regular-season finale with a 6 and 7 mark in conference play, 17 and 19 overall. A&M-Commerce is locked in at sixth place in the eight-team circuit, but that’s not as bad as it sounds. In the standings, only three games separate the top six teams in the LSC. Conference-leading Midwestern State has a 9 and 4 record in league play. And four teams go into this weekend’s action sporting identical 8 and 5 marks: Angelo State, West Texas A&M, Cameron and Tarleton State, which will visit the Field House to play the Lions on Saturday. Chitwood says that a crowded field of LSC heavyweights have been beating up on one another vigorously over the past two months.

Chitwood: Man, the men’s side is so loaded. Anybody in the top six can win this thing, and the Lions are pretty solid in there at number six, but they just, they don’t have any fear. You know, you win at San Angelo when the Rams were number four in the nation. You win at Midwestern State, which is always tough. The Lions have got it and proven it repeatedly over the course of the year. It’s just a matter of now, well who’s got their "A game" for three games next week in Allen.

Haslett: The conference tournament will begin at the Allen Events Center next Wednesday. You can hear all the games here on KETR. Chitwood says that this year’s Lions are every bit as fun to watch as last year’s team that won the conference tournament.

Chitwood: You know, you start out with Anthony Adams in the backcourt. Sam has started De’Andre Carson out there a number of times to be his backcourt mate. Jeremy Jones, one of the two guys from Chicago on the team this year, he can be a scary good wing player when he’s got his shot going. Everrett Pleasant, you know gosh, he can just dominate under the glass, but then sometimes he can step back and he’ll hit a three-pointer when you’d least expect it. Up front you’ve got Ronnie White, the other guy from Chicago, and then the pride of Harlem, New York in Bryant Crowder.  They can play close to the rim, they can score, and they certainly can rebound, and they’re both pretty good shot-blockers, too.

Haslett: You can hear the Lions conclude the regular season Saturday evening at home against Tarleton State here on KETR. Tip-off at about 6 o’clock following the women’s game.
