Lions defeat Kingsville 37-17 with strong second half

A&M-Commerce got off to a slow start, but were able to finally put points on the board with a Theo Wofford touchdown reception and a Michael Wallace pick-six which put them ahead 14-0 after one quarter of play

The Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions football team had to stifle a would-be comeback attempt by the Texas A&M University-Javelinas, but ultimately were able to put the game out of reach in the final quarter to secure a 37-17 victory at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville on Saturday night.

A&M-Commerce (2-1, 1-0 LSC) got off to a slow start, but were able to finally put points on the board with a Theo Wofford touchdown reception and a Michael Wallace pick-six which put them ahead 14-0 after one quarter of play.

Texas A&M-Kingsville (1-2, 0-1 LSC) made things interesting with a 48-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown just before halftime, and another score in the third from Myles Carr to Torrey Thomas to tie the game. The Lions silenced all doubters with two touchdowns of their own in the third quarter to go up 31-17, and any potential momentum for the Javelinas was stripped from them with a key interception on 4^th and Goal with about six minutes remaining in the contest.

A&M-Commerce quarterback Harrison Stewart finished the game 11 for 22 with 128 yards and three touchdowns. The Lions running game was once again the driving force behind their offense, churning out big yards to set up short throws for Stewart. Richard Cooper and Theo Wofford combined to rush for 272 yards, with Cooper rushing for a touchdown. Lance Evans led all Lion receivers with 79 yards on three catches, and Derrick Macon had two touchdowns on just three receptions.

The A&M-Commerce defense stifled the Javelina running game for most of the tilt, holding their rushers to just 67 yards. The secondary had an active night, coming up with two picks, including one for a touchdown. The Lions defense also sacked Carr five times on the night.

A&M-Commerce’s next opponent will be the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico University. The Greyhounds (2-1, 0-1 LSC) are coming off of a back and forth game against Midwestern State University, which saw the Mustangs score the game winning touchdown with only 21 seconds remaining. Eastern New Mexico features a powerful running game, and are averaging 36 points per game. A&M-Commerce won the last meeting between these two teams by a score of 48-32. The game will be held at Memorial Stadium in Commerce.
