After a nearly three-hour lightning delay before the game even began, the no. 8 Texas A&M University – Commerce football team headed home from Odessa late Saturday night/early Sunday morning with a 58-21 win over UT Permian Basin in a game that was called after three quarters. At 12:30 Sunday morning, as the teams lined up to pick up play late in the third quarter, the game headed for another weather delay. After some deliberation, the teams, the referees, and the Lone Star Conference agreed to end the game with what ended up being the final score.
Luis Perez led the Lions (9-1, 7-1 Lone Star Conference) offensive attack, going 18-25 for 273 yards and five touchdowns. D'Arthur Cowan was Perez’s favorite target, as he had seven catches for 91 yards and a touchdown. Chris Chumley also added five catches for 92 yards. Ovie Urevbu led all rushers with 9 carries for 91 yards and a score.
The Lions defense held the Falcons (2-8, 0-8 LSC) to 66 rushing yards and caused two turnovers in the game. Yusef Sterling-Lowe recorded his second straight game with an interception. The Lions defense had gone eight straight quarters without allowing any points until UTPB scored a touchdown with 3:47 left in the second quarter.
Next week, the Lions finish the regular season with a Senior Day matchup against Tarleton State (5-5, 5-3 LSC). The game has a scheduled kickoff of 4 p.m. You can hear every Lions football game on KETR at 88.9 FM and right here online at ketr.org.
