Local Delta County Incumbents Sweep Primary Election

The watchful crowd gathered in the hallway of the Delta County Courthouse grew especially quiet as the election results were posted for the local contested races. Delta County Judge Jason Murray retains his seat garnering 760 votes to his opponent Bonnie Hobbs, who received 412. Justice of the Peace Ginny Phifer, who is still recovering from illness in the hospital, earned 818 votes Tuesday night to candidate Chuck Reed, who drew 347 votes. For Precinct 2 Commissioner, incumbent Gary Anderson took in 139 votes to opponent Jimmy Sweat’s 87 votes. Over 1,200 votes were cast, higher than usual for a primary race.

“This election show Delta County has liked the last three years. We are making progress and continue to improve,” said Judge Jason Murray following the results. He expressed appreciation to his supporters.

Serving as Delta County Treasurer will be Debbie Huie, who received 951 votes in her uncontested race. She said she was blessed and ready to serve.

Taking on his fourth term will be Precinct 4 Commissioner Mark Brantley, who received 30 votes in his uncontested race. He was accompanied by District and County Clerk Jane Jones as she had 114 votes.

Republican County Chairman will be Joe Adams as he had 844 votes in an unopposed run.

Delta County favored all the propositions on the ballot which ranged from right to healthcare to national jobs program to right to a fair criminal justice system. In addition Governor Abbott took 881 votes in Delta County, in the Agriculture Commissioner contest Sid Miller led with 493 votes, State Senator’s race was close as Cindy Burkett had 53 percent (586) to Bob Hall’s 47 percent (528), and Reggie Smith outgained his two opponents Brent Lawson and Kevin Couch in Delta County votes with 311 or 52 percent.
