Dr. Karri McCreary of the Greenville Animal Hospitalsays be cautious in exposing dogs to fireworks. Many find the Fourth of July exhibitions of pyrotechnics terrifying, just as many dogs are afraid of thunder. Dogs may run away in fear, or they may just pant heavily and show anxiety. Dr. McCreary says "thunder shirts" do help some dogs feel more secure, but others are not helped. It's good to keep dogs indoors if possible, or in a secure crate, and vets can prescribe anti-anxiety medications.
