March Madness: Lions Ready for Lone Star Conference Tournament This Week

 

The women's bracket for the Lone Star Conference Basketball Championship March 2-5 at the Allen Event Center in Allen, was finalized Feb. 25 as the league's basketball teams wrapped up the regular season. The LSC Women’s Basketball Tournament Champion earns the league’s automatic qualification to the 2017 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball South Central Regional.

The Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team got a come-from-behind 78-69 win over UT Permian Basin on Saturday. The win brings the Lions to 20-8 on the season and 14-6, fourth in the Lone Star Conference. It is the second 20-win season for the Lions in their history.

Jenna Price was named Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year, marking the second time in three seasons a Lion has won the award, and the third time in school history. Brianna Wise was named to the All-Defensive Team, the third consecutive year a Lion has been named to that team. Artaejah Gay was named Second Team-All LSC and Khala Riley was named Third Team All-LSC. Krystal Pickron and Price were named Honorable Mention All-LSC at the annual Lone Star Conference Championship Banquet on March 1.

The fourth-seed Lions return to action March 3, as they play in the quarterfinal round and face No. 5 Tarleton State at 6 p.m. at the Allen Events Center. TSU women's basketball fell in its regular season finale to West Texas A&M, 73-69. The Lions swept the TexAnns during regular conference play.

The LSC Men’s Basketball Tournament Champion also earns the league’s automatic qualification to the 2017 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball South Central Regional.

The Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball team closed the regular season on Saturday with a 86-69 loss to the UT Permian Basin Falcons. The Lions end the regular season fourth, with a record of 18-9 overall and 10-8 in the Lone Star Conference. UTPB claimed the LSC title with a 14-4 league record, 23-5 overall in their first year in the conference.  

Malik Albert was named First Team All-Lone Star Conference and Trey Seymore was named Third Team All-Lone Star Conference at the LSC Championship Banquet on March 1.

The fourth-seed Lions will face fifth-seeded Cameron at 8:30 p.m. on March 3 at the Allen Events Center, with the winner advancing to the semifinal round on March 4. The championship games will be played March 5.

Tickets are available through Ticketmaster outlets and Ticketmaster.com, as well as the Allen Event Center box office. Single-session tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.

LSC tournament games will be streamed live free of charge through the LSC's GameCentral portal (http://portal.stretchinternet.com/lonestar). Lions games will be broadcast on Lions Network KETR 88.9 FM.
