In order to keep the office of the Justice of the Peace functioning in the wake of the passing of Judge Ginny Phifer, the Delta County Commissioners Court sworn in Shannon McCulloch. McCulloch has been an employee/clerk in the office since August 2017, serving under Judge Phifer. She has been handling the business of the office alone since January 16, 2018.
She will serve just until a replacement can be selected by an executive committee (which does not involve the County Precinct Commissioners, but Voting Precinct Chairpersons/Representatives for the Justice of the Peace to which there are seven) for the ballot for the General Election in November.
Republican Chairman Joe Adams is assisting this process, overseeing details, but said he is not a deciding entity. Adams will officially take office on June 11, 2018. The Secretary of State has been consulted, as well. The committee will have to wait until after the State Convention in June to meet.
Action was motioned by Precinct 3 Commissioner Bobby Asbill and seconded by Precinct 2 Commissioner 2 Gary Anderson. It passed in a 4-0 vote.
The Primary Run-Off Election for the Republican and Democratic Parties will be held on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at the usual polling places between the hours of 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Early voting will end on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 5 p.m.
