Seven Hunt County Courthouses Have Stood On The Current Site

Hunt County Courthouse, 1885-1929

Correction to original story: Carol Taylor updates us that at least seven courthouses have stood throughout history on Greenville's downtown square,

Carol Taylor, chairman of the Hunt County Historical Commission, says the existing Hunt County Courthouse is at least the fourth courthouse to sit on the square in downtown Greenville.  The first was a very modest structure, but the second and third were each very ornate buildings, almost identical to each other.  The first of those was completed in 1883, but burned down only about a year later, to be replaced by an almost identiical building.  The current courthouse has stood since 1929.
