Smith, Charged With Killing Matts Sisters In Commerce, Accused Of December Murder In Denton

Jacques Dshawn Smith, 21, is charged with capital murder of multiple persons in connection with the deaths of Deja Matts, 19, and her sister, Abbaney Matts, 20.
Hunt County
Jacques Dshawn Smith, 21, was arrested Tuesday and charged with capital murder of multiple persons in connection with the deaths of Deja Matts, 19, and her sister, Abbaney Matts, 20.

The man accused of killing two women on the campus of Texas A&M University-Commerce has now been charged in connection with another slaying in Denton.

Jacques Dshawn Smith, 21, was arrested Tuesday and charged with capital murder of multiple persons in connection with the deaths of Deja Matts, 19, and her sister, Abbaney Matts, 20. Both women were found shot to death at Pride Rock Residence Hall on Monday. Abbaney Matts’ 2-year-old boy was also found injured by gunfire. The child was treated at an area hospital and released into the care of family on Tuesday.

Law enforcement officials say that a Tuesday search of Smith’s apartment in Rowlett revealed unspecified evidence that connected Smith with the death of 22-year-old Steven Daniels, who was shot to death in Denton on Dec. 31. Smith has been charged with capital murde in connection with Daniels’ death. Also charged in connection with Daniels’ death were Jalin Hargove, 23, and Earnest Rogers, 26, both of Denton. Evidence found at Smith’s apartment led officers to arrest Hargove and Rogers, police said.

Smith remains at the Hunt County jail. Held on a $1 million bail for both the capital murder of multiple persons charge and the capital murder charge. Hargove and Rogers are being held at the Denton County jail, each on $1 million bail.

Smith is the ex-boyfriend of Abbaney Matts, university police said. One week before the shooting, he was arrested on an aggravated assault charge after he attacked her and threatened her with a knife, Garland police said. He was released from jail Jan. 29 after he posted a $15,000 bond.
