Spooktacular first time event, Disney-themes top awards

Nov 1, 2015

Disney's UP characters Mr. Carl and Mrs. Ellie Fredrickson aka Jaxon Cameron and Kinley Busby won Grand Prize in the Scream on the Square event in Sulphur Springs on Halloween.

They were in good company with other Disney-themed winners including: Samantha Albert as The Little Mermaid’s Ursula, Daron and Melissa Bilyeu and family as Toy Story characters Sheriff Woody, Jessie, Buzz Lightyear and even a little green man squeeze toy and Tatum and Taylor Thompson portraying Cruella de Vil and one of the 101 Dalmatian puppies.

This was the first time the Celebration Association offered the “Scream on the Square” event in Sulphur Springs on Main Street.

“We estimate based off candy given there were over 1,000 trick o’ treaters for Halloween. Then you add parents and grandparents, it was an amazing turnout! We packed the street,” said IdziBitsy Bakery owner Michelle Idzi, a contributing sponsor of the event.

Besides the costume contest with cash prizes, the event included a photo booth, face painting, games, haunted house, bounce house, Schwinn tricycle races, and pumpkin painting contest. Many of the activities were also contributed by the Sulphur Springs High School Student Council, Sulphur Springs High School Blue Blazes and the City of Sulphur Springs.

“It was better than I could have ever imagined it would be. I think the kids had a blast, and parents were happy they had a safe place to be all day,” said City of Sulphur Springs Community Development Specialist Yorri Franklin. “This event made me love what I do even more than I already did!” She is already looking forward to next year and helping to make it even bigger and better annual event.

Several Sulphur Springs businesses teamed up with Sulphur Springs students to help ensure the success of the event; and fortunately, the weather also cooperated.

“We wanted it to be fun for the little kids,” said John Reed of Lou Viney’s, who helped assemble the tricycles. They hope to be able to use these games again in future events.

Over 250 photos are on display on the Sulphur Springs facebook page for those who participated in the photo booth. For that link: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1051731811538194.1073741899.269285513116165&type=3
