A diverse economy helps put Austin ahead of all other state capitals, according to WalletHub.

Austin is the country’s best capital city to live. That’s according to a new report released Tuesday by WalletHub. The study ranks Austin the number one state capital overall, based on factors like quality of education and healthcare, as well as economic wellbeing and quality of life.

The city ranked second, third, and fourth among the nation’s state capitals in those categories, respectively.

She says Austin’s overall livability lies in its diversity – both culturally and especially economically.

"If you look at Austin, they have a very good, diversified economy," says Dr. Meghna Sabharwal, Ph.D. director at the Public and Nonprofit Management program at UT- Dallas. "They have good tech companies, digital media. They have space technology, life sciences, clean energy. They’ve really diversified the economy, and that makes it very attractive.

Sabharwal also says Austin’s K-through-12 and college opportunities place the capital on solid ground for the future.
