Suspect in Caddo Mills murder case files writ

A suspect charged with murder in connection with a Friday afternoon shooting death in Caddo Mills is seeking the appointment of an attorney to represent him.

Joshua Madison Newkirk remains in custody in the Hunt County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond in connection with the death of Joshua Edmund Gerber.

Newkirk, 28, filed a writ from the jail, seeking the appointment of a defense attorney. A hearing on the writ is scheduled for 9 a.m. today in the 196th District Court.

According to a report from the Caddo Mills Police Department, Newkirk allegedly shot Gerber three times with a .25 caliber pistol following an altercation at a residence on Farr Street in Caddo Mills.

Murder is a first degree felony, punishable upon conviction by a maximum sentence of from five to 99 years to life in prison.
