Texas Hunger Group Lauds Senate Farm bill

With the 2018 Farm Bill officially out of Senate committee and on its way to the Senate floor for a vote, at least one group in Texas is happy to see what the Senate has come up with. Hunger advocacy group Feeding Texas says it applauds the proposed Senate version of the bill.

In a statement, Feeding Texas CEO Celia Cole said the provision to factor in the importance of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, is the most welcome change from the House version that failed in committee last month.

One of the major criticisms of the House bill was that it ignored SNAP. Democratic Georgia Congressman David Scott went so far as to call the House bill racist, saying it punished poor and minority children by removing nutritional assistance from schools.

In her statement, Cole said “The House farm bill failed because it ignored the evidence that SNAP is critical to protect our neighbors, bolster our economy, and brighten our future."

The Senate version keeps SNAP. That bill passed out of bipartisan committee by a 20-1 vote yesterday.
