AUSTIN - A large percentage of Northeast Texas schools failed to meet federal accountability standards, which falls in line with the rest of the state.

Roughly a dozen local districts now either move into or continue in the School Improvement Plan and are “subject to sanctions.”

All together, over 44 percent of schools statewide met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards compared to nearly 48 percent that fell short, according to the Texas Education Agency, who released its annual report Wednesday.

The Dodd City, Ector, Sulphur Bluff and Wolfe City school districts are among those found to have met AYP standards, while Lone Oak ISD missed AYP despite each of its four campuses found in compliance. See the breakdown here.

Meanwhile, the districts of Bonham, Commerce, Greenville, Honey Grove, Paris and Quinlan fall into the School Improvement Plan.

According to the TEA, districts or campuses that miss AYP for the same reason (reading, mathematics, graduation rate, or attendance rate) for two or more years and receive Title I funds – federal dollars used for educating low-income students - move into the program. The majority of Title I districts and campuses that missed AYP are in Stage 1, having missed AYP for the same reason for two years in a row.

But Commerce, Greenville and Quinlan ISD are now in Stage 3, which requires parent notification and the state to take at least one of seven corrective actions (See: LEA Stage 3 Requirements).

When broken down by school district, just 339 Texas public and charter school districts — or 27.6 percent — met AYP. Some 71.4 percent did not. Those tallies were down dramatically from 66 percent of school campuses and 50 percent of districts overall in Texas that met AYP standards in 2011.

Here’s a snapshot of the list of local school districts that are in Stage 1, 2 or 3 of the School Improvement Plan and their subject improvement requirement(s):
