The projected number of pedestrians killed by motor vehicles on U.S. roads last year was the highest since 1990. And the number of such deaths in Texas was the third highest in the country.
That’s according to a new study from the national Governors Highway Safety Association.
The report projects more than 6,200 pedestrian traffic deaths last year. From January through June, Texas accounted for almost 300. In fact, Texas and four other states accounted for almost half the country’s pedestrian traffic deaths. And this is all a reversal of what had been a downward trend.
The report suggests rapid population growth in Texas is a main contributor to the uptick in pedestrian traffic deaths. The state saw a 12 percent increase last year over 2017.
