Opponents of a proposed toll road between Greenville and far northeastern Dallas County plan to present their objections to elected officials throughout the area on Tuesday.

The activist group Texans United for Reform and Freedom (TURF) plans to hold a press conference at 9:30 a.m. on Tue. Oct. 14 in front of the Hunt County Auxiliary Courtroom at 2700 Johnson St. in Greenville. TURF also plans to make its case during the Hunt County Commissioners Court meeting scheduled for 10 a.m. at that same location.

An already violent summer in Hunt County has become even more tragic, with yet another shooting death reportedly having occurred in the county.

The Hunt and Collin county sheriff’s offices are involved in the investigation into the death of Oscar “Junior” Ovalle of Plano. Ovalle, 20, was reported to have been shot in the head Sunday morning at a residence near the Hunt/Collin county line, and died later at a hospital in McKinney.

Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks said the circumstances behind the shooting were still being ironed out as of Thursday night.

A severe weather system that struck Northeast Texas on the evening of April 3 resulted in several small tornadoes, along with high winds and large hail. Multiple structures were damaged and several injuries were reported throughout the region.

Thousands of homes and businesses lost electrical service during the storms. Flooding followed the storms.

Northern Hunt County was hit hard, with significant damage between U.S. Highway 69 and State Highway 34 north of Greenville.

A big crowd filled the Fletcher Warren Civic Center in Greenville Thursday night, for the latest public meeting concerning plans to address future transportation issues along the Blacklands Corridor between Greenville and the Dallas area.

The region is in for windy conditions on Thursday, and areas to the west of the region will experience very dry conditions as well.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday for these areas, including Collin County. This means that any fires that start will spread quickly and could threaten property and even life.

Make sure you dispose of cigarettes properly, do not burn anything outdoors, and be mindful sparks during construction projects.

The eastern Collin County communities of Josephine and Lowry Crossing will decide whether to legalize alcohol sales in the May 11 election.

Communities in eastern Collin County will soon have some public transportation options for getting into McKinney or elsewhere in the area.

A bill with possible implications for public-private transportation projects like the proposed Blacklands Turnpike is making its way through the Texas Legislature.
