Pud Kearns with Housewarmers of Greenville comments on the day-long series of events taking place in honor of the Fourth of July in Greenville, starting with the Firecracker 5-K at 8 a.m., followed by the Park Street parade at 10 a.m. and a program of patriotic songs at the Kavanaugh United Methodist Church on Park Street 11.  The city's Bottle Rocket Bash starts at 6 p.m.

Commerce Chamber of Commerce manager Paul Voss relates plans for the "Bois D' Arc Fourth of July" celebration Sunday night (June 30) at Centennial Park.  Paul says the chamber receives a major price reduction in the fireworks display by holding the event the weekend before July 4.  The event includes live music, children's activities and food.  KETR will broadcast from the event.  Admission is one can of food per individual to be donated to the Commerce Food Bank.

Commerce Chamber of Commerce manager Paul Voss says this year's Independence Day celebration takes place Sunday evening, July 1 at Centennial Park.  The event includes music from the Cross Trails Cowboys Church Band and Twisted Whiskey.  The event will include with a major fireworks display.  Paul says the former Taco Bell location in Commerce is being remodeled for a new Burger King, which is expected to open this summer.

Carol Taylor, the chairman of the Hunt County Historical Commission, says in the early days of Greenville and Hunt County, Independence Day was celebrated with a big barbecue.  But after the Civil War, the Fourth of July was not observed for many years until 1898, following the end of the Spanish-American War.
