Learning about Santeria in Cuba

Santeria, or "devotion to Saints," is a practice still utilized in Cuba. Originating from Cuban slaves' African heritage, it is a blending of Yoruba mythology mixed with Christianity. Orichas (deities) are paired with Catholic Saints to form this meld of beliefs, known as religious syncretism.

Mary learned much about the practice of Santeria during a recent trip to Havana, Cuba.

Born in Dallas, Texas, Matt moved to the Sulphur Springs area in 1990 and settled in Commerce shortly thereafter. Mary Walker Clark is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Houston Law School.
