Bond reduction sought in 2013 officer attack

A Greenville man, charged with injuring a local police officer, is seeking a reduction in his bond.

Dakalin Dyquez Edwards is already on probation after he admitted earlier this year to being a member of a local dog fighting ring.

Edwards was arrested by the Greenville Police Department September 4 on a charge of aggravated assault on a public servant, along with counts of evading arrest with a vehicle and possession of a controlled substance.

Edwards, 19, remained in custody at the Hunt County Jail Wednesday, in lieu of a total of $112,000 bond on the charges. He has filed a writ of habeas corpus from the jail, seeking the appointment of an attorney and/or a reduction in his bonds.

A hearing on the writ is scheduled today in the 354th District Court.

City of Greenville Public Relations Liaison Autumn Barton said Edwards was arrested following a chase with the police department.

“The aggravated assault charge was the result of a lengthy vehicular pursuit which culminated in Mr. Edwards using his vehicle as a weapon and injuring one of our officers,” Barton said.

Edwards entered guilty pleas during a March hearing in the 354th District Court to one count each of dog fighting and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Edwards entered open pleas, meaning that no plea bargain agreement had been arranged in the cases and that Edwards is subject to the full range of punishment.
