Texas Congressman Jeb Hensarling will retire at the end of his House term in 2018.
The Republican represents Texas’ 5th US Congressional District. That includes parts of Van Zandt, Wood, Kaufman, and Dallas Counties.
Hensarling is the current chairman of the House Financial Services Committee. He took the position in 2011, succeeding Vice President Mike Pence. Though Hensarling is still considered influential in House financial matters, he’s grown increasingly at odds with fellow Republicans on Capitol Hill in the past few years. Nevertheless, the Dallas Morning News quoted an unnamed GOP lawmaker saying that there is some speculation that with Hensarling being so close with Vice President Pence, he could be "well positioned for a strong opportunity in the Trump administration.”
Hensarling has served District 5 since 2003.
