Deadline Monday to file for May 9 election

Commerce – Today is the final day to file for local city council and school board elections on May 9. Filing ends at 5 p.m.

For the City of Commerce, Tommy Hall and incumbent Tony Henry are the only individuals to have filed for Place 1. Henry filed on Friday. For Place 3, David Hitt is the only one to have filed so far. According to Assistant City Secretary Becky Patillo, incumbent Richard Hill has picked up an application packet, but has not yet filled it out.

Filing takes place at Commerce City Hall at 1119 Alamo Street.

For the Commerce School Board, Place 6 and 7 are up for voter approval. The latest report has Randy Starks against Emma Martin for Place 6, which is currently held by Debbie Aikin. Aikin has indicated she will not be seeking another term.

For Place 7, Hector Arce will oppose incumbent Medley Wilson.

Interested persons can file at the CISD Administration Building at 604 Culver St.

Later this week following tonight's filing deadline, KETR will inform you of all area city council and school board candidates.

There will be an election in Greenville on May 9 after all. Mike Smith filed Friday afternoon and will face incumbent Place 6 Council member Betty Franklin.

No one has filed or announced they would file to oppose either Mayor Tom Oliver or Place 5 Council member Bryan Herrin for. Should no one else file for those seats, the Council will have the authority to declare Oliver and Herrin the winners by acclamation and cancel those contests.

Filing will continue until 5 p.m. today at the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. Early voting is scheduled between April 27 and May 5.
