Earlier in March, the Gender Studies program at Texas A&M University-Commerce celebrated Women’s History Month with a screening of the award-winning documentary “Left On Pearl.”

The film depicts a landmark event in the U.S. women’s liberation movement. In 1971, on International Women’s Day (March 8), hundreds of women from the Boston area took over and occupied a Harvard University-owned building in Cambridge, Mass. During the 10-day occupation, activists demanded a Women’s Center to serve the metropolitan Boston area. The action was a success and led to the longest continuously operating Women's Center in the country.

Historian Dr. Rochelle Ruthchild of Brookline, Mass., stopped by the KETR studios along with Texas A&M University-Commerce Gender Studies department head Dr. Sharon Kowalsky to discuss the film and the context of women’s rights struggles that continue today.
