Convo (Podcast) Episode 1: We're Talking a Lot About Sexual Harassment. But Why Now?
The conversation about sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior isn't a casual one these days.
Powerful men in the entertainment industry, icons of news media, and political officeholders on the left and the right are toppling under the weight of of allegations that they used the workplace as if it were a live-action Tinder account.
But accusations of inappropriate behavior are nothing new. So why are we talking so deeply about this now?
For the first edition of the podcast Convo, I spoke with Dr. Sharon Kowalsky, an associate professor of history and director of the gender studies program at Texas A&M University-Commerce. She says that as we continue to have this conversation, men and women need to keep a lot in mind, and that we need to have a way to discuss the issue and fix the problems without doubling down on the longstanding cycle of blame and dismissiveness.
She also deftly dismantles my preconception that the fall of powerful men parallels much about the fall of the U.S.S.R. in the early 1990s. Trust me, when you hear it, that will all make sense.
