TEA staff to host session for Phoenix Charter School parents

Brad Kellar

The Texas Education Agency will host an information session for parents of students currently attending Phoenix Charter School in Greenville, which is slated for closure at the end of the current school year.

The session will take place Thursday at 5:30 p.m. on the school campus at 8501 Jack Finney Boulevard in Greenville.

Phoenix Charter School is scheduled for closure following non-renewal of the school’s charter. The charter holder for Phoenix Charter School is The Phoenix School. The charter campus will close July 31, 2015, when the contract for charter officially expires.

During the session, TEA staff will provide parents information regarding the charter school’s closure, alternative educational options in the immediate area for next school year, as well as parental rights and procedures for securing their student’s school records.

The school district or charter their son or daughter will attend next school year will need official student records.

Phoenix Charter School teachers and staff will also have an opportunity to meet with TEA staff to ask questions related to the school’s closure.

TEA notified Phoenix Charter School leadership in December 2014 of the decision for closure. The Commissioner of Education upheld the decision in April of this year.

Phoenix Charter School has not met its academic and financial accountability requirements in three out of the last five years. The charter had unacceptable academic ratings in 2010-2011 and 2013-2014. The charter had an unacceptable financial rating in 2012-2013.

A management team has been appointed to oversee all close-out activities of the charter.
