Doctors Creek Unit just celebrated 20 years of service to this area and Delta County. On Jan. 3, 1996 Doctors Creek Unit of Cooper Lake State Park opened. The Cooper Lake Project was authorized in 1955 and construction began in 1986, according to the history sited.
Cooper Lake as it is fondly referred is currently just over six foot over the normal full pool of 440 foot, which includes flooding of some areas of both the just over 700 acres of Doctors Creek and also in some of the just over 2,000 acres of the South Sulphur Unit in Hopkins County.
The parks offer programs for visitors on a regular basis from star gazing to nature hikes led by park officials. Doctors Creek is also supported by the Friends of Doctors Creek organization to which helps support the operation of the park including events like the drive through Christmas lights display and annual fish fry and fishing tournament.
A unique “buried history” lies under the waters of this lake as traces of earlier residents. The history of the Caddo Indians that came here thousands of years ago, and settlers and farmers moved into the area in the 1800s can be found under the blue Cooper Lake waters.
