Christmas in the Park Washed Out

Washed away by the flooding is the ninth annual Christmas in the Park set for Cooper Lake State Park Doctors Creek.

The Friday and Saturday night drive-thru display set for Dec. 11-12 has been canceled for this year reports Park Manager Mindy Hicks.

“The lake hit its highest point early this morning,” said Mindy Hicks on Tuesday. “It is slowly beginning to drop. Many roads are completely covered in water, and the roads can’t handle the extra travelers. Back in May when it flooded, it took eight days for the water to recede, and this time it is four foot higher.”

She said they will be busy with repairs needed to the shelters, currently submerged in flooded waters.

“It really is worse than the ice storm [which also canceled the event] because of these repairs to the shelters and loss of revenue,” she added.

The event’s proceeds go to the Friends of Doctors Creek Park, and it was established for the community.

While there might be barricaded roads, she said they have the office open for licenses, park pass purchases and souvenirs sales. For more information call 903.395.3100.
