Recent Rains End NE Texas Drought

The March 5 map of Texas drought activity shows a clear slate for the Northeast.

Northeast Texas is finally out of drought. After several weeks of increasingly dry conditions regionwide, last week’s heavy rains removed all layers of drought status between Dallas County and Texarkana.

The Texas Water Development Board says February was among the wettest Februaries on record in Texas. Some areas ended the month recording up to 15 inches of rain. Late-month rains dropped the percentage of the state classified in drought by 16 percent. Just over half the state remains in drought, compare to nearly three-quarters of the state just last week.

The Panhandle however got almost none of the rain. Conditions for all of the panhandle range from severe to extreme.
