COOPER - Delta County authorities are praising the response of its staff and citizens during Tuesday’s storms.
While the county was spared from any tornadoes, they were placed under several warnings, along with the rest of the region.
Delta County Judge Herb Brookshire says as many as 160 people took shelter in the courthouse basement. And that’s a good choice, according to County Fire Marshall and Emergency Management Coordinator Jack Kiley.
"It's probably one of the safest buildings here in town... the basement is partly below ground," Kiley said.
He's working to expand county’s emergency notification system, IRIS, to reach all citizens so they can be notified of severe weather via email, voice and/or text. The same service is offered in Commerce and at the university.
