A Grayson County District Court has sentenced a hunter to an unusual punishment. Thirty-four-year-old John Walker Drinnon of Whitesboro, convicted of illegally killing a deer on private property will serve time in jail over the next five years – but only on weekends during hunting season

The creative sentence also puts Drinnon on five years' probation. Drinnon will also pay $18,000 in civil penalties and be barred from buying a hunting license during his incarceration.

Earlier this month, Drinnon allegedly told Texas wildlife officers that he'd shot the deer just across the border in Oklahoma. But officials say the white-tailed buck was killed with a rifle in Grayson County. Grayson is a bow-only county for hunters.

Drinnon’s sentence begins December 30.
