Hunt County DA Nobie Walker says he’s asked the Texas Rangers to investigate the shooting of a dog by Commerce’s interim police chief. Interim Chief Jason Rector is accused of shooting a dog while on duty in March. The dog later died from the wound.

Walker says the Rangers may or may not take the investigation. That depends on whether a preliminary investigation yields enough to go further. Commerce City Manager Darrek Ferrell says the city does anticipate an investigation, which is typical any time there is a use of force by an officer on duty.

Rector is one of four finalists for the permanent position of Commerce Chief of Police.
