Cooper Independent School District recently announced the candidate selected to replace Lynn Byrd as the Cooper Elementary Principal. Mrs. Byrd retired at the end of this year.

“I’m pleased to announce we have found an inspirational candidate for our elementary principal position: Mrs. Melissa Johnson,” said Cooper ISD Superintendent Denicia Hohenberger. “Melissa is an enthusiastic and passionate leader with a servant’s heart. She is dedicated to guiding teachers and students to succeed while inspiring an insatiable passion for learning in both.”

According to Superintendent Hohenberger, Johnson, who has over 16 years in education, most recently has been an Instructional Coach leading teachers and students at McKinney ISD’s Leonard Evans Middle School. She has ties with this area as her husband, Steve Johnson, is the superintendent at nearby Miller Grove ISD.

Also in this meeting new Board of Trustee member Shawn Stegall was sworn into service. The Board had a vote to reorganize the officers. Those included Thomas Darden once again resuming is role as Board President, Blake Randle as Vice President, and Kregg Slakey as Secretary.

District replaced the old field turf on Bulldog Field. After some redistricting of Class 3A Division II, District 9, Cooper will face some new teams – Bells, Blue Ridge, and some old foes – Leonard, Chisum, Prairiland, and Whitewright in the upcoming season.

The Board will meet again on Monday, June 18 at 7:15 p.m. at the administration building.
