Local burn bans to remain in effect for awhile

Area county commissioners approved to extent their county's current burn bans during meetings Monday morning.

Fannin County chose to extend the ban for another 90 days upon expiration of their current ban, which runs through mid-Oct. Hopkins County's ban will run through the remainder of the year.

The drought has gotten so bad in some parts of South Texas that Chambers County has decided to put up permanent signs warning of a burn ban. The signs have a hinge so they can be lifted up once the burn ban is lifted. About 30 signs have been placed throughout the county.

Currently 250 of Texas' 254 counties are under a ban on outdoor burning. Fines and even jail time could be levied against those found in violation of the law.
