Folks whose pantries could use a helping hand during the holiday season will be able to pick up food in Greenville at an event hosted by the Lone Oak-based organization Community Seeds.
The food boxes, obtained by Community Seeds through the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, will have more than the usual assortment of dry goods common at food banks. Items will also include fresh vegetables, fruit and dairy products.
The event is scheduled for 4 p.m.-6 p.m. Friday. Dec. 4 at the Texas National Guard Armory Building, 9314 Jack Finney Blvd. in Greenville.
Volunteers to help with the event will be welcomed on site at 3 p.m. Volunteers are asked to wear a face mask, be free of COVID-19 symptoms, be able to lift up to 30 pounds, supply their own drinking water, and be dressed appropriately to greet the public outdoors. Friday’s weather forecast predicts partly sunny skies with afternoon highs in the mid 50s, though temperatures should drop quickly after sundown around 5:15 p.m.
Community Seeds has been distributing food from USDA since May, agency head Bert Cooper told the Greenville Herald-Banner that the distributions might not continue after Friday’s event.
“The USDA Distributor has said it will probably be our last, but we’re waiting for what God will say about that,” Cooper said.
