Vice President Kamala Harris was sworn into office on Wednesday, January 20, making her the first woman, the first black person, and the first person of south Indian descent to obtain the second highest office within the U.S. Government. Harris is on the record crediting her experiences in her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha on the Howard University campus, with preparing her for life in politics.

KETR’s Jerrod Knight speaks with another Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority alumna; this one from the chapter on the campus of Texas A&M University-Commerce: Dionica Bell.

Bell is a Student Affairs Officer at the University of California - Davis, and works primarly to recruit and retain black students through outreach and academic interventions.

In a Zoom visit recorded on Thursday, January 21, Bell describes the pride and the hope she and those closest to her felt as they watched their Alpha Kappa Alpha sister inaugurated to the highest U.S. Government office ever held by a woman.
