Former Wood County Sheriff, Deputy Charged in Land Dispute Incident

A grand jury yesterday indicted former Wood County Sheriff James Brown on charges that he used his authority to keep a mineral rights owner from his own property.

The indictments allege that Brown blocked the property with his official vehicle and had the landowner arrested under false charges.

The indictments happened on the same day one of Brown’s former deputies was charged in connection with the alleged false arrest. Former Deputy William Tucker was charged with third-degree aggravated perjury and two new charges of Class-A official oppression.

Those charges are on top of two earlier charges of third-degree tampering with evidence and  Class-A official oppression, following indictments in August.
