The Hopkins County Health Care Foundation is offering 100 free PSA tests to eligible men during September as part of its annual men's health initiative.

The prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, screening requires only a blood draw, said Emily Nance, the Foundation's community engagement and fundraising coordinator.

“There is no poking or prodding or uncomfortable undressing involved at all,” Nance said. “This is a simple blood test.”

The free screenings are primarily available to uninsured Hopkins County men age 50 and older. Men may qualify beginning at age 45 if a father, son or full brother has had prostate cancer.

First responders who work in Hopkins County may also qualify even if they live outside the county, provided they meet the applicable age requirements.

Appointments are required, and the Foundation has 100 free tests available. Testing will take place throughout September.

Nance said anyone interested should call 903-438-4543 and ask about the Foundation's free men's clinic. Staff will determine eligibility and schedule an appointment.

If a test produces a result that requires further attention, Nance said a physician will contact the patient to discuss follow-up care.

The Foundation has offered men's health clinics for several years, although this is its first year to provide free PSA screenings. Last year's men's clinic focused on heart calcium scans.

“We are still pioneering different causes and different clinics for the men and finding what best fits this community,” Nance said.

The Hopkins County Health Care Foundation also supports a separate free women's health clinic providing mammograms.
