CISD takes no action on cell phone ban

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The Commerce School Board Monday took no action regarding the use of cell phones in the district's school zones.

The item was first brought up after a citizen expressed concern during the board's June meeting of how operating a cell phone in a school zone can pose risks to students.

After receiving from the City of Commerce and discussing Monday the contents of a proposed ordinance prohibiting the use of cell phones in school zones, board members gave no formal approval of the ordinance.

Members questioned how such an ordinance would be effectively enforced, while comment was also given as to other safety concerns not currently being addressed and where the focus should be.

The proposed ordinance submitted by the City is said to be similar to the ordinance currently being used by Highland Park and University Park. Both school districts earlier this year prohibited the use of cell phones and other hand-held communications devices in school zones when those zones are in effect.
