Greenville candidates to win by acclamation

By Brad Kellar, Scott Harvey

Greenville, Commerce – Two Greenville residents have already claimed their seats for the May 9 election.

Mayor Tom Oliver and Place 5 City Council member Bryan Herrin have won second terms on the Council, as no one signed on to oppose them. The Council intends Tuesday to cancel those elections and declare Oliver and Herrin the winners by acclamation.

There will be an election for at least one of the three spots open on the Council, as Mike Smith will face incumbent Place 6 Council member Betty Franklin. Early voting for the Place 6 race is scheduled between April 27 and May 5.

For the City of Commerce, both seats up for voter approval in May are contested races.

Tommy Hall and incumbent Tony Henry are each vying for Place 1, while incumbent Richard Hill and David Hitt are candidates for Council Place 3.
