Commerce accident victims will be OK

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The two students involved in a one car accident in Commerce Tuesday night will reportedly be OK.

19-year-old Michael Swann has been released from Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville, while 20-year-old Joshua Perry is expected to be released Wednesday.
The two Texas A&M University-Commerce students were crossing the street near the intersection of Culver and W Neal Street in front of Whitley Hall when they were struck by a car driven by 41-year-old Terry Pope.

Both sustained concussions. Perry also required staples for lacerations to the back of his head, according to Commerce Police Chief Kerry Crews.

Pope, who is also a student, told officers he was exiting the West Halls parking lot and turning onto Culver when he struck Swann and Perry. He reportedly did not see the victims walking across the street as he approached the intersection.
The injuries could have been worse, as Pope reportedly hit both individuals at a low rate of speed.

"He didn't have a chance to gain much speed," says Crews, referring to Pope hitting them immediately after turning onto Culver.

Pope was uninjured in the accident.
