Agreement could boost university enrollment

By Brent Lyday

Commerce – Texas A&M University-Commerce may see an increase in enrollment thanks to an enrollment agreement with Texas A&M University and The Texas A&M University System. The new Program for System Admissions will allow students to transfer from A&M-Commerce into certain degree plans at Texas A&M University in College Station.

Beginning with the fall 2010 semester, students who apply to Texas A&M and meet admission requirements but are denied due to enrollment caps, will be referred to regional universities within the A&M System. After completing two years on a regional campus and meeting other criteria, students will be eligible for automatic transfer to Texas A&M.

"We are very excited about this formal agreement with the A&M System," said Stephanie Holley, dean of enrollment and retention division at A&M-Commerce. "We have long been interested in serving students through this kind of partnership. Since we are charged with and poised for enrollment growth, this provides an additional vehicle to attract and retain quality students."

To qualify for automatic admission, a student must have completed at least 24 credits in transferable classes since high school graduation that satisfy a Texas A&M degree plan, have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA for all courses in the Texas A&M degree plan, and have met all other general transfer admission requirements, among other conditions.

"The agreement benefits A&M-Commerce and our students," Holley said. "This group can either be a part of a seamless transition back to A&M-College Station after their time at A&M-Commerce, or better yet, choose to stay at A&M-Commerce providing us the opportunity to serve and retain the student through graduation and into a graduate program. We will provide a rich academic experience at a very affordable price."
