Commerce election filings off to slow start

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The latest election filings in Commerce show mostly incumbents expressing interest in running for office.

For the Commerce School Board, Ted Oats has filed for Place 4 and Willie Blow has filed for Place 5. Oats ran unopposed for the school board in May 2008. Current board president Willie Blow was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Dr. Anthony Harris in August 1999.

On the City Council, Place 3 Incumbent Richard Hill is seeking another term. It is still not clear whether Place 1 Incumbent Tony Henry will again seek re-election. The two longtime council members were re-elected after facing opposition in 2009.

Currently, John Sands is the only non-incumbent seeking a council seat. The former councilman filed for Place 1 on Wednesday. Sands was last on council in 2008, but failed to win a bid for the mayor's post, losing to current Mayor Quay Throgmorton.

Filing continues through March 14 at the CISD Central Administration Building and at Commerce City Hall.
