Campbell residents identified as murder suspects

By Brad Kellar

Greenville – Capital murder charges have been levied against 23-year-old Arturo Vega and 22-year-old Gabriela Ortiz in the death of a young boy.

Two-year-old Brandon Herrera was found dead Sunday near Campbell, having reportedly suffered from blunt force trauma. Authorities say autopsy results are pending but preliminary results could be available by the end of the week.

The two suspects are being held in the Hunt County Jail in lieu of $2 Million bond each.

The Hunt County Sheriff's Office, Texas Rangers, CPS and the Hunt County District Attorney's Office is assisting in the investigation.

In a release issued Tuesday by the Sheriff's Office, Undersheriff/Chief Deputy Joe Knight stated "Every available resource has been placed into service in this effort and the cooperation between agencies has been remarkable; yet the senselessness and sadness of this event pervades the very heart of everyone involved in this disturbing event."

Ortiz is a cousin to the victim. The two suspects had been caring for the boy for several weeks. Herrera's parents listed a Dallas address.

The investigation is ongoing.

A candle light vigil is planned for Herrera Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Coker Matthews Funeral Home in Greenville.
