Remediation of Superfund site nearly done

GREENVILLE - The Environmental Protection Agency says that cleanup of the contaminated former ESCO site in Greenville is almost complete.

Remedial Project Manager Charles Fisher says crews are scheduled to complete final grading of the site this week. They will then add mulch for standing grass across the site. Both entrances will be paved and parking places will be added.

Remediation began in March. The site was placed on the Superfund list in September 2008 after tests on the soil at the old plant location discovered the ground was contaminated with PCB's.

Cleanup cost about $7 million and will lower contamination enough to allow the site to be utilized for residential and recreational uses.
