SULPHUR SPRINGS - The longtime Sulphur Springs city employee who died on the job last week will be laid to rest Thursday.

All city offices will close temporarily at 1 p.m. that afternoon so employees can attend funeral services for Francisco Melendez, to take place at the Hopkins County Civic Center. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening with a Rosary beginning at 7 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church.

Melendez died after he became stuck and overcome with water inside a manhole at Coleman Park. He had entered the hole to unplug a sewer line. Emergency crews were unable to revive him after pulling him out nearly an hour later.
