Let the renovation begin

SULPHUR SPRINGS - Downtown restoration efforts in Sulphur Springs eclipse yet another milestone as crews are officially cleared to begin work on the new city office.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday morning at the old Sulphur Springs Library, the site of the new offices along Davis St.

Mayor Craig Johnson says the project has been one of the easiest to receive support from the city council and public.

“For years people have been driving by this building and watching it deteriorate and it’s just such a pretty building and a grand building. Everybody said something needs to be done with it and they’re happy that we’re now finally doing that.”

The building was originally built in the early 1900s as a Carnegie Post Office, according to Johnson.

“We’re going to have a fine balance between making this a working seat of government but we also want to preserve the historical nature of this building... This is a beautiful building and we want to retain that historical feel when you walk into it. There’s very few buildings like this left.”

The project should take about a year to complete. Upon completion, most city administration offices will make the move next door. The current municipal building at 125 South Davis will continue to house the Sulphur Springs Police, water and utility departments.
