Paris Man Linked to 1994 North Texas Slaying

Times Record News
Wesley Melton

SEYMOUR, TX - Investigators have used DNA evidence to accuse a Lamar County man, arrested for parole violation in May, to a killing nearly two decades ago.

Baylor County Sheriff Bob Elliot tells the Wichita Falls Times Record News that routine DNA tests link 50-year-old Jack Wesley Melton to the 1994 shooting of Florence Kate Martin at her home near Mabelle. Elliott says the 69-year-old Martin apparently was a random victim.

The report shows that in 1988 Melton was sentenced to 30 years for burglary of a habitation with intent to commit another felony. He was paroled in 1991.

Details on his sex offender record weren't immediately available.

He is jailed on $500,000 bond.
